Canadian diamonds have recently been discovered. In the 1960s prospectors began to look for diamonds in Canada but it wasn't until the 1980s and 1990s that diamond deposits were found. This discovery is very exciting because it offers American jewelers a place to obtain the precious stones on the same continent. This new find has helped consumers in buying the stones at a lower price. The industry in Canada has also benefited with new jobs being created to mine, cut, and polish the stones. Jewelry made from these stones will continue to become more and more prevalent in North America and all around the world.
For a long time, people thought finding diamonds in Canada was just a prospector's dream. The dream became a reality following a discovery in the 1990's. It was discovered there were several world-class diamond-bearing deposits in northern Canada. Diamond exploration began in Canada in 1960, but major discoveries were not found until the 1980's. The first set of economic diamond deposits were found in the Lac de Gras area of the Northwest territories -- it truly was amazing to find Canadian diamonds.
Now the Canadian diamonds market is growing and blossoming within the diamond industry. They bring in over two billion dollars and indicate they have the potential for future growth. In 2003, there were 11.6 million carats produced and is increasing each and every year. They have now opened a second mine called Diavik. They feel this mine will last at least twenty years and are expecting to pull out at least three to five million carats every year which is at least four percent of the world's volume -- with more mines scheduled to be opened.
